Beach Vacation Packing List: Clothes, Gear and Extras

The simplest way to decide what to pack for a beach vacation is to sort it into five groups: clothes and shoes, sun protection, toiletries, beach gear, and documents. Pack from those groups and you will rarely forget anything important.

This list works for a week away, and it keeps clothes to pieces that mix with each other. If you have an hourglass shape, the waist-defining pieces below (wraps, belts, high-waisted bottoms) are easy to fold into it.

What to pack for a 7-day beach vacation

A week is easier than it sounds if you pack around two or three colors. Everything then works with everything else, and you can rewear without it looking repetitive.

• 2-3 swimsuits, so one can dry while you wear another
• 2 cover-ups: one light and flowy, one that works for lunch
• 3 tops, such as tanks or tees
• 2 bottoms: tailored or pull-on shorts and a high-waisted skirt
• 2 dresses, one casual and one for dinner
• 1 light layer for breezy evenings, like a cardigan or sheer kimono
• Underwear and sleepwear for each day, plus a spare

Beach vacation packing list: clothes and shoes

Choose clothes that dry fast and fold small. Through the lens of evidence-based design, I'd pick a matte, textured weave over a glossy one for daytime, because surface changes how a color reads in strong sun, and matte tends to look calmer.

Shoes

• Flip-flops or slides for the sand and pool
• One pair of comfortable walking sandals
• One dressier flat or wedge for evenings
• Sneakers if you plan to hike or travel in cool weather

Fabric and color notes

Cotton is comfortable, but it holds moisture. A Texas A&M Howdy Health guide notes that cotton absorbs moisture and can keep it next to your skin, which makes you cold. That advice is written for cold-weather exercise, but it is worth remembering for a damp swimsuit on a windy evening: change out of wet fabric soon after swimming.

For colors, crisp white and light neutrals feel fresh on a beach day, while deeper jewel tones suit dinner. Pick two accent colors and repeat them across your pieces.

Swimsuits, cover-ups and sun protection

Sun protection is the one category where it pays to be thorough. Pack sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat.

On hats, Anna L. Chien, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says: "A hat with a 3-inch brim protects the top of your scalp, ears and face."

If you buy sun-protective clothing, check the UPF label. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ offers excellent protection. A UPF swim shirt or long cover-up is a practical addition if you will be outside for long stretches.

Clouds and windows do not make you safe. Dermatologist Elizabeth K. Hale, MD, explains that UVA rays penetrate through windows and clouds year-round, so keep sun protection in your bag even on overcast days. For skin concerns, check with a dermatologist.

Section 04

Toiletries to pack

• Sunscreen and after-sun moisturizer or aloe
• Shampoo, conditioner and body wash in travel sizes
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
• Face wash and moisturizer
• Hair ties, a brush and a leave-in product for salt and chlorine
• Any prescriptions, plus basic first-aid items

If you are flying with only a carry-on, check the airline's liquid rules before you decant. Solid shampoo bars and sunscreen sticks take up less room.

Section 05

Beach gear to pack

These are the things to pack for a beach trip that make the day itself comfortable:

• Beach towels, ideally quick-dry
• A large tote with a zip or a dry bag for wet items
• Reusable water bottle
• Beach umbrella or pop-up shade, if your destination does not rent them
• Waterproof phone pouch
• Snorkel gear, if you have your own
• A book, headphones and a portable charger

If you are flying, rent the bulky items (chairs, umbrellas) when you arrive and keep your suitcase for clothes.

Section 06

Documents and miscellaneous

• ID or passport, and visas if required
• Boarding passes, hotel and car-rental confirmations
• Travel insurance details
• Cards and some local cash
• Chargers and a plug adapter

Pack a small zip bag for sandy or wet items so they do not touch your dry clothes. If you want a printable version, copy these headings into a note and tick items off as you pack.

Packing tips that save space

• Roll lightweight clothes and use packing cubes to keep outfits grouped.
• Wear your bulkiest shoes and layer on the plane.
• Choose pieces with ties or belts, since they adjust to different outfits.
• Leave a little room for souvenirs.
