A good beach vacation packing list is built around a few things: swimwear you can rotate, light clothes that mix, sun protection, a small toiletry kit, and the documents and chargers that are painful to forget. Everything below is organized in that order, so you can work down it once and close the suitcase.
If a favorite outfit never feels right at the beach, the problem is usually fabric and fit, not taste. Pick breathable pieces in a short color palette and you will wear almost everything twice.
What to pack for a beach vacation: the quick version
- 2-3 swimsuits and 1-2 cover-ups
- Tops, shorts or a skirt, and one or two dresses in light fabrics
- One layer for cool evenings
- Sandals, a walking shoe and a dressier flat or sandal
- Sunscreen, a wide-brim hat and sunglasses
- Toiletries, medications, chargers and travel documents
- A beach bag, towel and a few things to do on the sand

Clothes and shoes to pack
Choose one color story before you pack. Two neutrals (white, sand, navy or olive) plus one or two accent colors make nearly every top work with every bottom. This matters more on a beach trip than a city one, because you will be changing in and out of swimwear and want the in-between pieces to be easy.
Clothes
- Four to five tops: tanks, tees or a loose button-down
- Two bottoms: shorts and a flowy skirt or lightweight pants
- One or two dresses that work for lunch and dinner
- One light layer: an overshirt, kimono or thin cardigan
- Sleepwear and enough underwear for the trip
Linen, light cotton and jersey knits breathe well in heat. Linen wrinkles, which is part of its look, so do not fight it. If you want something smoother, choose a knit or a wrinkle-resistant blend. Through the lens of evidence-based design, I'd pick the softer weave when you are torn between two pieces in the same color, because texture changes how a color reads and how comfortable it feels after hours in humid air.
One caution on cotton: Howdy Health at Texas A&M notes that it absorbs moisture and can keep it next to your skin. That advice is written for cold-weather exercise, but it is a good reason to bring a quick-dry top for hikes or boat days.
Shoes
- Flip-flops or slides for sand and pool decks
- Supportive sandals or sneakers for walking
- One dressier flat sandal for evenings
Three pairs is enough for most trips. Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane.

Swimsuits, cover-ups and sun protection
Bring at least two swimsuits so one can dry while you wear the other. Pick a fit that stays put when you move, since a suit you keep adjusting will spoil a beach day faster than the weather.
Cover-ups do double duty. A button-down, a sarong or a loose dress covers you for the walk to lunch and adds shade on the sand.
Sun protection to pack
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen and a lip balm with SPF
- A wide-brim hat
- Sunglasses
- A UPF shirt or rash guard if you will be in the water for long stretches
For hats, Anna L. Chien, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says in the Skin Cancer Foundation's expert Q&A: "A hat with a 3-inch brim protects the top of your scalp, ears and face." The same page explains that a UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ offers excellent protection, which helps when you are comparing swim shirts.
Cloudy days still count. Elizabeth K. Hale, MD, a dermatologist in New York City, says in the Skin Cancer Foundation's sun protection style guide that UVA rays penetrate "through windows and clouds year-round." Pack sunscreen even if the forecast looks gray. For skin concerns, check with a dermatologist.
Toiletries to pack
- Sunscreen and after-sun moisturizer
- Shampoo, conditioner and a detangler, since salt and chlorine tangle hair
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
- Face wash and moisturizer
- Prescription medications in their original packaging
- A small first-aid kit with bandages and blister patches
- Hair ties, a brush and a clip
If you are flying with only a carry-on, decant liquids into travel-size bottles that meet the airline's rules. Check your airline and airport for current limits before you leave.

Beach gear to pack
Decide first what your rental or resort supplies. Many provide towels, chairs and umbrellas, and you can skip hauling them.
- A large tote that handles wet and sandy items
- A quick-dry beach towel
- A waterproof phone pouch
- A reusable water bottle
- A small dry bag for keys, cards and cash
- Snorkel gear or a beach toy if you will use it
- A book, a downloaded playlist or a deck of cards
Keep this beach gear to pack in a separate tote so it is ready to grab each morning.
Travel documents and miscellaneous items
- ID or passport, plus a photo of it saved offline
- Boarding passes and booking confirmations
- Credit and debit cards, and a little local cash
- Phone, charger, power bank and a plug adapter if needed
- Travel insurance details, if you bought a policy
- A small zip bag for wet swimsuits
What to pack for a 7-day beach vacation
For a week, plan on wearing things more than once and doing a quick rinse if needed.
| Item | Count for 7 days |
|---|---|
| Swimsuits | 2-3 |
| Cover-ups | 1-2 |
| Tops | 5-6 |
| Shorts, skirts or pants | 2-3 |
| Dresses | 1-2 |
| Light layer | 1 |
| Shoes | 3 pairs |
| Underwear and socks | 7 days, plus 1-2 spare |
Those are starting counts, not rules. Adjust for laundry access and how many dinners out you expect.
Packing tips for flying to the beach
For a beach packing list for flying, put your swimsuit, sunscreen in a compliant bottle, medications, chargers and one outfit in your carry-on. If checked luggage is delayed, you can still be at the water the same day.
- Roll light clothes to cut creases and save space.
- Wear your heaviest shoes and layer on the plane.
- Leave room in the bag for a wet swimsuit and souvenirs.
- Weigh your bag before you go to avoid fees.
