For a dressy event, pick the shoe by how long you will stand, then add the statement. A pointed toe flat or a low block heel carries a dress as well as a stiletto does, and a bold detail (metallic finish, crystals, a strong color) is what makes the shoe read as intentional.
Below: which style suits which dress, how high a heel should go, what to check for fit, and four outfit formulas.

Which shoe style works with which dress?
Match the shoe's visual weight to the dress. A plain sheath or a slip dress can take a heavily detailed shoe. A beaded or sequined dress wants something quieter underneath.
- Sheath and midi dresses: a pointed toe flat, a slingback or a Mary Jane keeps the line long and clean.
- A-line and cocktail dresses: ballet flats and loafers both work, since the skirt already adds movement.
- Gowns: a heel with a slim strap peeks out as you walk. A metallic flat can do the same job if the hem is long enough to skim it.
- High-slit dresses: the shoe is on show, so this is the place for crystals or a bright color.

Are flats and loafers dressy enough for formal events?
Yes, if the material and shape are right. Leather flats for ladies in patent, satin or metallic finishes read as evening shoes. A pointed toe lengthens the foot and looks more formal than a round one. A sleek loafer with a polished or chain detail suits a tailored jumpsuit or a midi dress at a dinner. Our post on jumpsuits for corporate holiday events shows where that pairing fits.
Through the lens of evidence-based design, I'd look at surface first. A glossy toe catches light and draws the eye down, while a matte suede toe recedes and lets the dress lead.

What are flats with heels called?
There is no single name. Depending on the shape, you will see them sold as kitten heels (a very low, slim heel), block heels, slingbacks (open back with a strap), or Mary Janes (a strap across the instep, often with a low heel). Low heel flats and loafers are the shops' way of describing this in-between group.

How high should the heel be?
Lower than most event outfits assume. Harvard Health says the most comfortable shoes for women are low-heeled but not necessarily flat, no higher than three-quarters of an inch. A podiatrist's take from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is that high heels and tight shoes put pressure on the ball of the foot, and the higher the heel, the greater the pressure.
Practical rule: keep a stiletto for a short red-carpet moment or a seated dinner. For a long evening, choose a block or kitten heel, or a ballet flat with a slightly raised heel. Block heels also hold up better on grass and cobblestones at outdoor weddings.

How to choose comfortable flats for women
A shoe that pinches is a fit problem, not a you problem. Check these before you commit:
- Toe room: Harvard Health advises leaving at least a quarter to a half inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Pointed toes should narrow beyond the toes, not squeeze them.
- Heel grip: the heel should fit snugly so the shoe does not slip.
- Sole and support: Wake Forest's podiatry piece describes sensible shoes as having a firm sole and arch support, with a snug heel and plenty of toe room.
- Material: leather molds to the foot over time, which is why many people prefer it for flats.
Podiatrist Gina Hild, DPM, says in Cleveland Clinic's guide to women's shoes: "Footwear that offers cushioning plus heel and arch support can help you relieve and manage symptoms". If you have ongoing foot pain, check with a podiatrist before choosing.
Hild also notes: "Shoes typically only last about six months or so depending on the activity level of the individual." Worn-out flats are worth replacing before a big event.

Four outfit formulas
Classic evening
Black sheath with a high slit, gold strappy heels, a gold clutch. Keep the jewelry small. For heel inspiration, see black heels for formal events.
Modern and bold
Cobalt one-shoulder midi, white sculptural heels or white pointed flats with metallic trim, silver earrings. More dress ideas are in dramatic one shoulder dresses.
Romantic
Burgundy velvet wrap dress, pearl-trimmed nude shoes, pearl drops. Nude shoes extend the leg line against bare skin, and velvet's deep pile makes a smooth leather shoe look crisp beside it.
Playful
Emerald A-line cocktail dress with leopard-print pumps or loafers, gold bangles, a black clutch. Let the print be the only pattern.

Tips for balancing a bold shoe
- Bold shoe, quiet dress. Bold dress, neutral shoe.
- Echo one color from the shoe in a clutch or earrings.
- With a printed dress, pull a shade from the print for the shoe.
- Pack foldable ballet flats if you plan to dance. Our guide to classic black pumps covers the heel side of the bag.
As an architect trained in evidence-based design, I'd treat the shoe as the last accent the eye reads, so one strong detail beats three competing ones.

Frequently asked questions
Are loafers still trendy?
Loafers remain a common choice because they work with trousers, skirts and midi dresses. Sleeker, polished versions are the easiest to dress up for evening.
Are ballet flats out of style?
Ballet flats stay a wardrobe staple, and pointed toe or metallic versions look more current than plain round ones. Fit and condition matter more than trend.
What are flats with heels called?
Usually kitten heels, block heels, slingbacks or Mary Janes, depending on the shape. Shops often group them as low heel flats.
Can I wear a bold shoe with a printed dress?
Yes. Pick one shade from the print and match the shoe to it, so the two read as related.
