A good beach vacation packing list is a small capsule: about a dozen clothing pieces in one color palette, two swimsuits, three pairs of shoes, sun protection and a short list of gear. Everything should mix with everything else, so a week fits in a carry-on.

Below is the list, organized by category, with a sample plan for what to pack for a 7-day beach vacation and a few notes on fabric and sun protection.

Clothes: the capsule for a week

Pick a base of two or three neutrals (white, beige, navy) and one or two playful colors like coral or turquoise. When every piece shares that palette, outfits combine without effort and you pack fewer items.

Tops

  • 2-3 lightweight tank tops in neutrals or pastels
  • 1-2 flirty blouses with ruffles, puff sleeves or a tie front
  • 1 linen button-up shirt, worn open over a swimsuit, tied at the waist or layered over a tank
  • 1 cropped top if you like the proportion with high-waisted bottoms

Bottoms

  • 2 pairs of high-waisted shorts, one denim or linen for casual days and one tailored
  • 1 flowy midi skirt
  • 1 pair of wide-leg linen or cotton pants for coverage without overheating

Dresses and layers

  • 2 sundresses in wrap, A-line or tiered shapes
  • 1 maxi dress for dinners
  • 1 romper for easy days
  • 1 lightweight denim jacket or a kimono for cool evenings and air-conditioned rooms

Swimsuits, cover-ups and sun protection

Two swimsuits let one dry while you wear the other. A one-piece can double as a bodysuit under shorts or a skirt, and a mix-and-match bikini gives you more combinations. Your linen shirt or kimono serves as the cover-up.

For fabric, look at the UPF label. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ offers excellent protection.

Hats matter too. Anna L. Chien, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says in the Skin Cancer Foundation's sun protection Q&A: "A hat with a 3-inch brim protects the top of your scalp, ears and face." Pack a wide-brim hat that you can crush a little, and sunglasses.

Sunscreen belongs on the list as well. Check with a dermatologist if you have skin concerns or reactions to certain products.

Shoes: what to bring for the beach and beyond

For a beach vacation packing list covering clothes and shoes, three pairs is enough for most trips:

  • Slide sandals for the pool, the sand and quick errands
  • Strappy sandals or espadrilles for dinners, which add a little height to a dress
  • White sneakers for walking days and the flight

If you are flying, wear the bulkiest pair and pack the others at the bottom of the bag, stuffed with socks or small accessories.

Sample outfits from the same pieces

  • Beach day: swimsuit, linen shirt as a cover-up, slides, hat and a tote.
  • Casual day out: white tank, denim shorts, sneakers and a crossbody bag.
  • Lunch: midi skirt, cropped blouse, espadrilles and statement earrings.
  • Dinner: maxi dress, strappy sandals, a lightweight duster or denim jacket and simple jewelry.
  • Travel day: romper, denim jacket and sneakers.

Choosing fabrics that work in heat

Linen and cotton breathe and feel light in humid weather. Chambray gives a denim look with less weight, and jersey travels well because it resists wrinkles. Eyelet and lace add a flirty texture.

Through the lens of evidence-based design, I'd pick a matte linen over a shiny synthetic for a beach dinner, because texture changes how a color reads: matte surfaces look softer next to sun-warmed skin.

One caution: cotton holds moisture. Texas A&M's Howdy Health advises that you avoid cotton because it absorbs moisture and can keep it next to your skin. That advice is written for cold-weather exercise, but it is a fair reason to pack a quick-dry fabric for active days or a swimsuit layer that you will wear wet.

Beach gear to pack

  • A large tote with a zip or a closing flap, so sand stays out
  • A quick-dry towel or a lightweight sarong, which also works as a scarf or skirt
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A waterproof pouch for your phone and cards
  • A small bag for wet swimsuits
  • A beach umbrella or shade option if your destination does not rent them

Rolled clothes save space in a suitcase, and a lightweight scarf can serve as a headband, a bag accent or a belt.

Documents, toiletries and other things to pack for a beach trip

Keep these in your personal bag, not the checked luggage:

  • ID or passport, boarding passes, booking confirmations and travel insurance details
  • Phone, charger and a portable battery
  • Medication in its original packaging

For toiletries, think sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, after-sun lotion, a travel-size shampoo and conditioner, a toothbrush, deodorant and any skin care you use daily. If you are flying with only a carry-on, check your airline's liquid limits and decant into small bottles.

Clouds do not cancel the need for sun care. Dermatologist Elizabeth K. Hale, MD, explains in the Skin Cancer Foundation's sun protection style guide: "You are getting hit, though, with ultraviolet A rays (also called UVA), which are longer wavelengths that penetrate through windows and clouds year-round. Those are the ones that contribute to tanning, hyperpigmentation, skin aging and also to skin cancer."

Packing tips for flying with a beach wardrobe

  • Wear your heaviest items on the plane: jacket, sneakers and the denim shorts.
  • Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics so outfits look fresh after the bag is opened.
  • Pack a layer. Evenings by the water and air-conditioned rooms can feel cool.
  • Put one swimsuit and a change of clothes in your carry-on in case your checked bag is delayed.
  • Leave room for souvenirs and a damp swimsuit on the way home.
